Encumbered life

He answered the phone
he might as well turned down the tone
the loud voice at the end of the line
kept screaming and became asinine
it was an argument, the third one this week
eventually this must be the highest peak
oh there were reasons for the sudden increase
lost his jobs, gambled away, died from joy’s release
he was bound to lose his shit
she, well, she didn’t want any of it.

Married life complicated, suffocating
five kids to bare, exhausting
little house by the cottage, college educated
broken by federal promises, still unemployed
crippled with debt
wishing to climb on to death
it’s a too familiar story
a standard imposed on people to be
due to fuck up legalities
and capitalistic schism.
